Carting Water

We got a late start this year. Yes, its September and I am getting a fair amount of tomatoes.

This year I learned what its like to grow food as a pioneer would have.
Waiting for the rain, but the most we have gotten is a quarter of an inch.
There is no water on the farm except for 2 ponds and the dry creeks. So, what do you do when it doesn't rain.
You cart water.
So, for the past three days I have filled the two water barrels I have, which hold 60 gallons each.

I will continue to pray for rain.

The building of our house is coming along.

The basement is in and they have begun

framing the house.

Yesterday, before we left the crew I

decided to take them some homemade

peach ice cream for a treat.

On a hot day something cold to eat is always

nice.

After, our wet spring the summer has been dry.

Which is making it nice for building a home.
The one thing I have noticed the weather in the
summer is hot and dry here in Kentucky.

This is what you see when you
drive away from the house.

The view is just lovely.

Mesculan Mix

Who would like to have salad.

To me its salad season.

I do not have space cultivated at the

farm. For a couple of reasons, it seems

we are having lots of rain. Everyday it

seems were getting a thunderstorm.

My dear husband went and got these crates

for me that he found on craigs list.

Not bad for two dollars each.

The house we are renting has a nice deck area.

So, I decided to grow lettuce seeds in the crate.

I start by putting paper in the bottom of the crate.

Then I add the soil, which is basically

dehydrated cow manure, peat moss,

and bone meal.

Sprinkle the seeds and sprinkle some soil.

Then you know what happened next, it rained.

Here is how you can find inspiration to grow

your own food?

I watched this video when

I lived in New Jersey on a small plot of land.

That was when I decided to change my life.

So, I began thinking outside of the box.

I started out small and the garden grew over

the years. By the time we moved I was gardening

on a plot of 2379 square feet.

That may seem like a lot but if we ate as many

fruits and vegetables that they recommend for

out diet its not.

Yes, I would like to grow what I eat.

April was a month filled with lots of activity.

It seems the month passed us by. Due to the high

volume of rainfall here in Kentucky.

The plants have been growing by leaps and bounds.

I am starting to think there is gold in my soil.

Mike and I went to the farm and could not

believe the growth of all the plants.

The rasberries that we stuck in the ground

don't even look like they were transplanted.

The Iris rhizomes I put in the ground last November are

getting ready to bloom. This I did not expect, I
assumed they wouldn't bloom until next year.

Luckily I picked a spot down by the
creek and they are on a slight slope.
This is extremely important in clay soil.
The puddling of water is a problem here.
I placed the Iris rhizomes in a single row of
about 20 feet. Along side them the garlic was
put in and they seem to be growing quite nice
next to each other.
My new Amish friends brought me back onion
seedlings so I put in 60 seedlings so far, these
I placed right next to the garlic.

My family also went on a Missions trip in April
to Central America. There were lots of last minute
preparations to do for this trip. Our departure date
was April 13 and we would be traveling to Nicaragua
and Honduras for 8 days. We went over there to see
how we were going to help people learn to grow food.

Spring is here

Spring is Here

I am so pleased to see Spring.

I love to see all the new plants

coming up through the soil.

We were at the farm this week as
the weather was nice, in the 50's.

The peas were breaking through the
ground making themselves known.

Flower farming is something I have
been looking into this past year.
We are going to begin with Iris
flowers since I have them in abundance.
When we lived in New Jersey I was always
propagating the Iris plants. I ended up with
hundreds of these precious flowers. If your a

Planting Peas

Planting peas was what I wanted to get into the ground as

early as possible. This year the weather cooperated and

we had some warm tempertures at the end of Feburary.

The Kentucky temperatures were in the 50's, so I took

the opportunity and started digging.

Just me and my shovel.

I got two rows of 20 feet long double planted.
The best part of getting these seeds in early is
we got some heavy rains. I am hoping to see
some growth when I get back to the farm.

Winter Activities

Today was so beautiful I spent the
day outside. After I got everything
settled I headed out to the farm.

I spent about 2 hours planting garlic.
I am only using a shovel.
The work is going slow, but quite
enjoyable.
I put in 41 bulbs today.

There is a little water in the dry
creek as you come into the property.
I was still able to walk over it.
I was glad about that. We have
had a good amount of rain since
last week.

Digging in the soil

The first planting has begun.
Yesterday we planted blueberry bushes,
iris rhizomes, and rhubarb roots.

I have to say the digging wasn't as easy
as New Jersey soil. This is much harder
soil to work in.
Mike and I spent half
the day planting.

We feel that we have begun.

Faith Lane Farm

Faith Lane Farm where did this name come
from?
When we drove up to the property it
was referred to as Shay Lane. Due to this
property being farmed, the road to the
property was formed. At the closing they
told us the name of the lane, Faith Lane.
I knew then that this was God's hand.

The crazy part is we drove to Kentucky
for our 25th anniversary. Who would
know we would buy property. My family
has listened to me talk about having a farm
probably my whole life.

Who would know the little red hair girl
from Goodland, Kans would move to
New Jersey to meet her prince.

There will come a day, when the
two would follow their dreams and
start a farm.

Trust in the Lord and He will give
you the desires of your heart.
